The von Randow family belongs to the very old nobility
of the archbishopric of Magdeburg. It appears from the obscurity of history for
the first time in 1236 with a document on Thegenardus (Degenhard) de Randowe.
(Register of the Monastery „Our Beloved Lady“ ["Unser Lieben
Frauen"] at Magdeburg, Nos. 9. u. 10.).
It‘s origin is the castle of Randau – on the Elbenau
river island south of Magdeburg – , that was destroyed at the end of
the 13th century and never rebuilt. The destruction resulted
from a long standing feud of the Magdeburg nobility with the mighty bishop and
sovereign of Magdeburg. Village and
estate of Randau
are situated on the old arm of the river Elbe, which prior to 1012,
before the Elbe changed it‘s direction, was the main riverbed. Nowadays this
bed is almost dried up.
In the following centuries the Randau family spread first to Anhalt and the archbishopric of Magdeburg as well as into the bishopric of Halberstadt. There – until 1350 – many Randows are mentioned in the documents mostly as cousins and brothers, rarely as fathers with their sons [see: älteste Ahnen / earliest Ancestry]. They were knights, owners of manors, clerical men or nuns. Because no relationships are given no assured line of descent cant be drawn for these early times.
Since the 2nd half of the 14th century three family lines are documentary manifested, who frequently are jointly invested with their fiefs. Their progenitors are in all probability among those mentioned before, because they are always invested with the same estates as those.
The First and Second Line of the Randows appear in the documents for the first time with an Arnold v. Randow (mentioned from 1363 to 1397). He was a magistrate of the archbishop at Plaue and owned estates at Redekin as well a Legen-Bellin, Gross-Wulkow and Langhusen.
An assured line of descent is starting for the 1st Line with Martin (documented from 1446 to 1479), who was feudal tenant on Bellin, Güssow, Redekin, Gross-Wulkow and Ferchland. For the 2nd Line the assured line of descent begins with Richard, who was „cousin“ of Martin and was invested with the same estates and additionally with Zabakuck. All those estates are situated in today’s district of Genthin.
At about the same time the 3rd
Line appears with Hermann
von
Randow, who is documented in 1382 as a vassal
at Zollchow in the dictrict of Jerichow.
(Feudal register of archbishop Frederic 2nd
of Magdeburg, State Archives of Magdeburg, Rep.- Cop 33, page 63)
Here too the unbroken line of descent
is only beginning more than 60 years later with Peter
v. R. (documented 1446 to 1478), who too is established on Zollchow (Documents
of the supreme court of the Holy Roman Empire in the State Archives of Magedburg,
branch office Wernigerode (Rep. A 53, K 3 I-III). That those three clans are
related to each other arises from the many joint investitures of all cousins.
The first two clans remained settled until the 17th century in the region of Genthin with only a small branch in Hornburg (district of Wolfenbüttel). They however all became extinct after the 30 year war in Europe. Only the 3rd line with it’s two branches continued until today. It also inherited the estates of the other two lines, by the name of Redekin, Bellin, Güssow and Zabakuck.
During the late 16th century the family divided into two lines, which derived from the two brothers Albrecht (1st line) and Caspar (2nd line) v. Randow. In the early 1600s Caspar’s son, Hans Caspar (1584-1633), moved to Silesia and thus became the founder of today’s „Silesian Line“. Near the end of the 18th century a descendant of Albrecht named Christian Ernst settled in Mecklenburg, after his father had sold the old family estates Redekin, Bellin, Güssow and Zabakuck. He thus established the „Mecklenburg Line“, which later also spread to Pomerania.
At the end of the 19th century a branch of the Mecklenburg-Pomeranian Randows emigrated to England, where descendants are still living. Other members of this branch emigrated at about the same time to the USA, where – after a prolonged search – descendants were found in 2004.
One of the Silesian Randows, Adolph, emigrated in the middle of the 19th century together with three of his sons to Brazil and thus became the founder of a very large Brazilian family branch, which now has about four times as many members as the European Randows.
Finally there exists a New Zealand branch of the Silesian Line, that hails from two brothers, Rabe and Tyll, who emigrated there after World War Two.
From 1804 until 1915 there was also a family „von Randow“ of patent nobility. Despite their parentage never was finally proven, it is included here to make genealogical relationships clear.
The spelling of the family name has varied in the course of time from Randau, Randaw, Randauw to Randow.
Coat of Arms: Within a red coloured escutcheon there is an inside rim of silver. On the helmet there are three ostrich plumes coloured red - silver – red, between which stand two little red-over-white flags pointing outward. – The oldest image of the coat of arms is on a seal affixed to a document of the year 1367.III.
